Ties Historic Mark
3x2Math- The first round of the 101st Metropolitan Championship at Heatherwoode Golf Club was played under warm and muggy conditions. Much like the weather, it did not take long for our defending champion Mikkel Mathiesen to warm up fast.  He went out with 3 birdies and an eagle in route to an opening 31.  He played his second nine with another 31 to tie our Metropolitan Low Score Mark of 62. He tied Josh Gilkison’s 2nd round score in the 2017 Metropolitan at Heatherwoode and Pete Samborsky’s 3rd round score in the 2007 Metropolitan at Troy CC.    Not too far behind Mathiesen was Brody Simms, who experienced a minor hiccup at the start of his round, opening with a bogey.  However, Simms didn't let the early setback dampen his game as he rallied to have six birdies throughout the rest of his round to finish with a 65.

Trailing behind Simms were Shane Ochs, Logan Menning, and Oscar Zimmerman, each completing their opening round with a score of three under, 68.

Two of our former champions, Jeff Scohy and Peter Samborsky, each came in with an even-par 71.

All told there were 9 scores under par and 14 scores at even par or better.

The hardest hole was the par four #16 with a +.82 scoring avg and it only yielded 2 birdies.  The easiest hole was the par 5, #9 hole and the field averaged .19 under par for the hole with 2 eagles and 31 birdies.  The average score for the day was 76.3

After Friday’s Round the field will be cut to 32 and ties for the final 36 Holes of play over the weekend.

Play starts tomorrow at 7:30am with the final group of Mathiesen, Simms and Ochs teeing off at 11:10am
