The Presidents Message

Dear Friends,

As I write this we are completing the 15th year of our rebirth as an association.  I believe that the progress we have made since 1992 has been tremendous.  The volunteers who have served during these past years have worked diligently to assure that your experiences, whether on or off the golf course, were positive and enjoyable.  I know that not all things have been perfect, but we have tried to learn from our mistakes and your suggestions.  I hope we have succeeded in making the Dayton District Women's Golf Association an organization of which you are proud to be a member.

My term as your president will conclude at the end of December.  I will be retiring from the DDWGA Board.  I have been a member of the Board in some capacity since 1992.  It will seem strange not to be involved in the monthly meetings and the decision-making processes, but I believe it's time for some new blood to take the reins and lead us forward.

I hope you will join me in thanking the past and present members of the DDWGA Board for their many hours of service on your behalf.  Their expertise and dedication make this organization one of the shining examples of volunteerism in the world of women's amateur golf.  I would also like to thank Executive Director, Steve Jurick, for his expertise and guidance as we have made the transition from a pencil and paper world to a web-based, new millennium style of information publishing.

In conclusion, I ask that if you are able and have some spare time, please find a way to volunteer to help build a stronger DDWGA.  Our work in course rating is important and interesting.  Our junior programs are always in need of fund-raising help and volunteers for tournaments and clinics.  Our associations sponsor educational seminars in rules, course rating, and handicapping.  Get involved and share your knowledge.

I want to thank you all for making my association with the DDWGA wholly positive.  I shall cherish the experiences always.  I would like to leave you with my favorite quote from Chicken Soup for the Golfer's Soul.

Golf teaches that on some dewy morning or some golden afternoon, with the sun warming the world, we can find ourselves walking through an improvised meadow and realize we are not searching for the little white ball, but for a moment where the world of nature and the world of play are one.  And then in the dew and sunshine we can understand that even though we can make a ball perfectly white, only God can make a meadow perfectly green.?  And it?s where I want to be.

Best Wishes,

Cathy Jefferson

FREE Golf, LunchClothing and be reimbursed for your Gas Mileage to Boot!

Yoga for Golfers with Shari Bowman

The most important piece of equipment in your golf game is your body!  By increasing your flexibility, your range of motion and your upper body strength, you can truly maximize your golf potential.  A local fitness professional is now targeting core strength, core rotation and flexibility in a golf specific setting.

Shari Bowman has been a Personal Trainer in the Dayton area for over 13 years, and is a Registered Yoga Instructor.  Four years ago Shari became one of the first 10 instructors in the United States to become certified to teach Katherine Robert's Yoga for Golfers Program.

Ms Robert's program was first featured on The Big Break.  She has been featured on ESPN, the Golf Channel and has appeared in Golf for Women's magazine.  Shari is the only instructor in Ohio certified to teach Yoga for Golfers.  This cutting edge class works on breath control, focus, core strength, balance, flexibility training and stability.

Shari has been working with local golf professionals, such as Roy Carmichael and Tim Walton, as well as the UD Girls Golf team, and amateurs alike, to help them optimize their body mechanics and mental focus.  Increasing not only their flexibility, but enabling them to develop a sense of effortless power and stability in their swing.

Yoga enables players to become more aware of their body.  This awareness brings a better understanding of body mechanics in the golf swing, and helps to create a sense of ease and relaxation in the swing.  The breathing techniques that are used in Yoga help the player to stay focused, relaxed and in control.

Another area of focus in Yoga for Golfers is core strength and stability.  Shari guides participants in developing abdominal strength and stability by utilizing principles of both Yoga and Isometric training.  Most participants will see a great improvement in core rotation after just one hour long session.

Classes are held every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at My Pilates Studio in Centerville.  Beginner workshops are available to be scheduled at alternate locations.   For information contact Shari at 937-657-7943 or sbowman@privateinvestmentgroup.com.
