Centerville resident Ron Eubel shot an even par 72 during Sunday’s final round to win the 2003 Miami Valley Metropolitan Stroke Play Championship.

After playing a steady front nine, coming in at a 1-under 35, Eubel double bogeyed No. 15, the 463-yard par 4, and bogeyed No. 16 to go 6-over for the tournament. But he bounced back and birdied No. 17 after placing his second shot to within five feet. Perhaps, Eubel’s best attribute gave him an advantage down the stretch. His calm, collected personality showed through, giving him enough composure to bring home his first ever Metro victory.

Breathing down Eubel’s neck the entire way around the golf course was runner-up Pete Samborsky of Dayton. He fired a final round 75 to finish with an 8-over 296 for the tournament. The turning point of his round came at No. 15, as well. His second shot went right into trees, and he took an unplayable lie, which caused a triple bogey 7 on the hole. Samborsky did close the tournament with a birdie at the difficult 18^th, a 420-yard par 4.

Finishing in third place at 297, was Kettering resident Bob Jones, who shot a 4-over 76 on the day. Jones birdied holes 1, 4 and 6 on the front, but could not keep the momentum going as he bogeyed holes 2, 3 and 9 and double bogeyed No. 7. After finishing the front with 38, Jones played a solid back nine, making an amazing par from a 30-foot putt on No. 18.

Mike Suttman and David Novotny finished in a tie for fourth place, both posting a 10-par score of 298.
