Raiders turn in program-best NCAA Regional finish; two inside Top 15

COLUMBUS – The Wright State golf team wrapped up the 2022 NCAA Columbus Regional on Wednesday, carding its highest team finish in program history while a pair of Raiders finished tied for 12th individually.

Wright State tallied an even par group score of 284 on Wednesday, its best round of the regional, to finish tied for ninth with Kentucky. The Raiders had never finished higher than 13th in their five previous NCAA Regional trips. Wright State ended the tournament tied with Kentucky and four shots ahead of No. 44-ranked Northwestern, while the Raiders finished one shot back of No. 41 Duke and two back of No. 23 Clemson.

Individually, Tyler Goecke and Davis Root finished as two of the three players in the tournament field to end in a tie for 12th at even par for the Regional, seven shots back of individual champion Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra from Oklahoma State. Goecke moved up the leaderboard with his one-under final round 70, carding three birdies and a pair of bogeys, including two in a three hole stretch with the low numbers on the 378-yard par 4 16th and the 417-yard par 4 18th before making his move to the front nine. Root carded a two-over final round 73, finishing with four bogeys and a pair of birdies. His first birdie came on his third hole of the day, the 562-yard par 5 12th, and he added the second on the 401-yard par 4 seventh as he closed his round.

Cole Corder turned in the most birdies by a Raider on Wednesday with four, as he ended his season with a two-under final round 69. Corder birdied the 417-yard par 4 18th as he made his turn, later adding back-to-back birdies on the 429-yard par 4 third and the 575-yard par 5 fourth hole. Corder ended the round with a final birdie on the 427-yard par 4 ninth to finish the regional nine-over in a tie for 53rd. Bryce Haney and Mikkel Mathiesen each finished tied for 63rd at 12-over, as Haney ended his collegiate career with a one-over 72 on Wednesday and Mathiesen carded a four-over 75 final round.

Wright State ends the year having tallied nine team tournament wins in 13 total events spanning the fall and spring schedule, a new program record, as five different Raiders captured an individual title. Wright State captured its seventh Horizon League Championship in 2022, leading wire-to-wire to notch its ninth team title of the season, a program record, and its second Horizon League championship in the last three years the tournament was held.
