New in 2023

WAGR_Release_copyMiami Valley Golf has taken steps to ensure that our Century old Amateur Championship, known as “the Metropolitan,” will receive World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) points for our annual 72 Stroke Play Championship.  This years championship will be held at Heatherwoode Golf Club, July 20 - 23.  This move comes in anticipation of the implementation of the American Develop Model for the Game of Golf in the US and the expansion of exemptions and financial support for Regional and National Championships.

The WAGR is a globally recognized ranking system for top-level amateur golf worldwide. By ensuring that our Metropolitan Championship meets this elevated status, future Miami Valley Golfers may be eligible to receive invitations and financial assistance to regional and national championships.

The WAGR was introduced by The R&A, the governing body of the sport of golf outside the United States and Mexico, in 2007. It is based on the results of over 2,600 amateur tournaments per year and is updated each Wednesday. The rankings are based on the players' average performances in counting events over a rolling period.

In February 2011, the United States Golf Association (USGA) endorsed the rankings and announced that they would use them for an exemption category in all their men's amateur championships, including the U.S. Amateur, beginning in 2011. The women's rankings were started in the same year.

Several players have held the No. 1 ranking as both an amateur and a professional, including Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Jon Rahm in the men's rankings, and Lydia Ko and Atthaya Thitikul in the women's rankings.
