DEVORE DEFENDS AND MARINANGELI WINS

Sycamore Creek CC, August 28 & 29, 2017
Like most of our Championships in 2017, the Senior Metropolitan and Mid-Amateur was effected by Mother Nature.  However, compared to other parts of our country she was kind to us.  All told we had just under 2 ½ hours of delays.  The first round only saw about an hour of rain with no delay's, just enough to bring out the umbrella’s, but not enough to change the fast course conditions.

After round one the defending Champion Dan DeVore led in the Overall Senior Division with a first round score of 74.  In the 65-74 age division, a first round score of 76 had two time Champion Skip Snow in the lead.  In the 75 and Older Division, Bruce Culpepper had a one-shot lead over Joe Reichley and Steve Smith.  Over in the Mid Amateur, 5 time Metropolitan Champion Pete Samborsky II was tied with Brady Marinangeli when both players opened up with an even par 72.

Tuesday however, welcomed us with a Lightning display that rocked the course and provided the Sycamore Creek layout with over .5” of rain.   After an hour delay allowing for adequate drainage and course preparation, the second round got underway at 9am. A little over an hour after our last group teed off, mother nature again disrupted play and forced an hour and twenty seven minute delay.

That delay did not stop Jeff Scohy from having the only under par round for the Championship when he birdied three of his last four holes to catch Brady Marinangeli when they both finished the 36 hole event tied at even par 144.  Jeff's great play did not last as Brady defeated Jeff in the Sudden Victory playoff winning his first MVGA Title.
Tight finishes were common for this years championship.  Our defending overall Senior Champion and now three-time winner Dan DeVore nearly did not defend as Emery Shumaker and Dave Novotny who finished in a tie for second, just one shot back.

Continuing with the tight finishes, Joe Reichley won the age 75 and older division by one shot over Steve Smith and Bruce Culpepper.

And in the 65 to 74 age division Skip Snow, our 2001 & 02 Senior Metro Champion maintained his two shot lead from day one outdistancing 2005 Sr Metro Champ, Doug Gage who finished in second place.

Thanks to Sycamore Creek for their Hospitality, especially Brain Burke and his turf staff who did a great job preparing the course each day.  Our Course Set Up specialist Troy Martin, our scoring volunteers, Mark Grunkemeyer, Emily Dell, Tony Pascale & Dick Roman and to all of you who played.
