It’s that time of year -- time for golfers in this vicinity to resume turning in their scores for the handicap system. Scores of rounds played on Southwestern Ohio courses during the winter are not factored into handicaps because playing conditions are usually adverse. However, a golfer playing somewhere in a warm climate during the winter should post that score. March 15 is the date on which golfers playing in the Miami Valley should begin posting scores for handicap purposes.

Regardless of their proficiency, most golfers who take the game somewhat seriously maintain a handicap index for a variety of reasons. First of all, handicaps enable golfers of all skill levels can compete on an equitable basis. They give golf an “equalizer” lacking in most other sports. Secondly, most competitions require players to submit valid handicaps. Soon golfers will be able to access the GHIN system through mobil apps on their Androids and I-phones.

The modest fee required to maintain a GHIN handicap helps finance the course rating process necessary to have handicap indexes. It also helps to support the associations that conduct golf programs in the community, so there is a philanthropic aspect to it.
