Mike Glendenning
Mike Glendenning took a liking to golf when he was young and made it his life's work. He has been a golf professional on the staff at Twin Base Golf Course for many years. A graduate of Fairborn High School and the University of Central Florida, Glendenning established himself as an excellent amateur player before turning pro. He won the Dayton Men's Amateur Match Play Championship in 1980 and won both the city match and stroke play championships in 1982. Then he turned pro and won six annual championships staged by the Miami Valley chapter of PGA of America. Twice -- in 1986 and 2006 – he won both the chapter's match and stroke play championships. He also won the MVPGA stroke play championship in 1994 and the match play title in 2007.
Kay Kennedy
When Kay Kennedy joined the LPGA Tour in 1984, she became the first native Daytonian to earn LPGA playing privileges. She remains the only player with Gem City roots to hold an LPGA card. She played 23 tournaments in 1984 and 28 in 1985 before leaving the tour. A graduate of Oakwood High School (1972) and Rollins College (1976), Kennedy was a finalist in the Dayton Women's Golf Associa-tion Championship in 1970 at the age of 16, runner-up again in 1973 and winner of the Dayton District Golf Association women's title in 1977. She was runner-up in the Ohio Women's Amateur in 1976. She turned professional in 1980 at the age of 26 and spent four years working at a golf course near in Vero Beach, Fla., while preparing for LPGA qualifying tournament. She earned her card on the seventh attempt in 1983. Kennedy, 59, never intended to be a tour “lifer,” preferring to be a golf instructor. She teaches now at McCormick Ranch Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Jim Neff
A native of Kettering, Jim Neff played on the golf teams at Fairmont High School and Wright State University before turning professional. He won his first City Men's Amateur Match Play championship in 1979 at the age of 20. After winning another City match play crown in 1984 and the stroke play title in 1985, he decided to play tournament golf full-time. He played on the Florida mini-tours for two years but didn't have enough success to merit continuing on that path. He returned to Dayton and became assistant pro at Meadowbrook Country Club in 1991. He was promoted to head pro in 1996. Neff, 54, began playing in Miami Valley PGA chapter events and won-back-to-back match play championships in 1998 and 1999. Over a three-year period he won 10 consecutive tournament matches before being denied a third title in 2000. However, he did win the MVPGA stroke play crown in 2000. Neff also was head pro at Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield.
Peter Samborsky II
Pete Samborsky II has put together one of the finest amateur records by a golfer in Dayton. The son of longtime Cincinnati golf professional Peter Eugene “Gene” Samborsky, Pete II settled in Dayton after playing on the Wright State University golf team.from 1993-94 to 1996-97. He has won the Miami Valley Metropolitan Championship -- the area's most prestigious tournament -- a record five times. Only one other player (Mike Suttman) has won it twice. Samborsky won at NCR South in 2002, at Greene Country Club in 2006, at Troy Country Club in 2007, at Piqua Country Club in 2008 and at Sycamore Creek Coun-try Club in 2011. Samborsky, a 39 year-old businessman in Beavercreek, qualified for the U.S. Amateur in 2001 and 2005, advanced to the U.S. Open Sectional in 2006 and 2007 and played in the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2010. He has been coaching the golf team at Wright State since 2009
Jeffrey Scohy
Since moving to the Dayton area after graduation from the Air Force Academy in 2000, Jeffrey Scohy of Bellbrook has qualified for more United States Golf Association events than anyone in the Mi-ami Valley. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur once, he has played in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship six times and was selected twice for the three-man Ohio team in the USGA Men's State Team Championship. In events sponsored by the Ohio Golf Association, the 36-year-old Scohy was runner-up in the 2004 Ohio Amateur, and a three-time runner-up in the Ohio Mid-Am. Scohy won the Miami Valley Metro Match Play Championship in 2004 and the Metro Stroke Play crown in 2010 after being runner-up in 2008 and 2009. Scohy grew up in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and was a three-time Armed Services champion while in the Air Force. He is a civilian employee at Wright-Patterson AFB.
