Two years ago the golf facility known as Greenville Country Club was reorganized to accommodate public golfers and renamed the Greenville Golf Course. This year the course has been renamed again, but golfers will find that the change involves more than just the name.

The 18-hole facility was purchased in December of 2011 by two former members -- Dave Frantz and Ron Sprinkel, who decided to make it a public course. They selected a new name – Turtle Creek Golf Course -- to distance it from its country club image.

The new owners are in the process of modernizing the club lounge. Kevin Chalk, the general manager and golf pro, said it will have “more of a sports bar feel” with two large flat screen televisions. It is expected to open in three weeks. “We’ve always had a strong golf course,” Chalk said. “People have always said that.”

Greenville’s first nine holes were built in 1921, and the second nine were added in 1990.

Speaking of remodeling, the City of Dayton is upgrading its three municipal golf facilities by planting some trees, installing new bunker sand and improving the irrigation systems. The pro shop and restaurant at Madden Golf Course will be stained and/or painted for the first time since they were built...

The name is new, but the tournament schedule is the same as always.

The group formerly known as the Dayton Senior Golfers Association is now known as the Miami Valley Masters. The Masters will have four 18-hole events this year. They will play at the Piqua Country Club on May 21. They’ll visit Troy Country Club on June 25, Moraine Country Club on July 30 and NCR Country Club on Aug. 27. . . 

Randy Boudinot, who spent 18 years as green superintendent at Country Club of the North, has replaced Sam Stroup in the same capacity at Walnut Grove Country Club. Stroup was the superintendent at Walnut Grove for 13 years. . .

The Larch Tree Golf Course, in Trotwood, which opened as a country club in 1973, will not operate in 2012. Mike Riley, who leased the course from the Eaton National Bank for the last three years, decided not to continue. The bank is in the process of selling the property. . .

Greg Lawrence made one of the most impressive holes-in-one you might see when he aced the par 3 No. 5 at Miami Valley Golf Club with a 3-wood on March 17. He was playing from the championship tees, and that hole measures 240 yards.

Lawrence is no stranger to success on the links. He won the MVGA’s Metropolitan Championship in 1996, the City of Dayton Men’s Amateur Match Play title in 2000 and the City of Dayton Men’s Amateur Stroke Play crown by 17 strokes in 2004. . .

The Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield will not open until early in April as a new ownership group takes over. Dan D’Arrigo and Rudy Mosketti, who opened the links-type course 10 years ago and hosted many MVGA events, lost the club in a bank foreclosure.
