Jandel wins with putts in Ohio Women's AmateurOakwood grad makes seven birdies to defeat the 2005 champ, 3 and 2.By the Dayton Daily News Dayton Daily News DUBLIN — There was no putting for dough, but Oakwood's Emma Jandel had the short club working Friday at the 83rd Ohio Women's Amateur Golf Championship. The Ohio State freshman-to-be defeated defending champion Kathleen Ekey, 3 and 2. The 18-hole match at Riviera Golf Club was shortened from 36 due to the threat of severe weather.Jandel said she drained a couple of 20- to-25-foot birdie putts and others from 15 feet. Including a concession on one hole, Jandel made seven birdies and never trailed in the championship match. "This is definitely one of my best wins," she said. "It's pretty big for me." Jandel's key stretch featured birdies at Nos. 8, 9, 10 and 12 that put her 5 up. She dropped a couple holes, but Ekey couldn't make up enough ground. Jandel had played high school golf against Ekey, who is now a sophomore on Furman University's team. "She's a really good player," said Jandel, who was the state medalist as a senior. "I worried about the course and not her." Earlier Friday, Jandel completed a 5 and 4 semifinal win against Akron's Cari Mozingo. This was Jandel's first Women's Ohio State Amateur. "I really didn't have any" expectations, she said. "Just play every day one shot at a time." In the first flight, Blacklick's Lauren Bergman beat Columbus' Nancy Sneed 6 and 5. Springboro's Leslie Grabeman defeated Centerville's Colleen Lienesch 8 and 6 to win the second flight title. |
