HAPPY SILVER ANNIVERSARY!!!!
That’s right, 25 years ago Cathy Jefferson, Diana Schwab, Alice Burton and Floris Fortune created the Dayton District Women’s Golf Association with a vision to build camaraderie among the lady golfers of the Miami Valley AND to mentor young girls in the game we all love.
We have an awesome line-up for our traditional events this year PLUS the Mixed Metro is back!!!!
The Spring Shamble is Monday, May 15 at Sugar Valley GC.  Grab three friends and sign up for the first event of the season.  We have 17 teams registered to date so there’s plenty of room for more!!!!
Tuesday, June 6, 2017 is Women's Golf Day which is a four hour experience happening globally where women and girls can experience golf for the first time or where current players can play and engage with women interested in golf.  Next year we plan to have programming on this day. Friday, June 16 is the Diana Schwab Get a Girl Golfing event at Rollandia.  This event highlights the DDWGA’s dedication to introducing golf to young ladies of the Miami Valley.  Linda Becher is our Chair for this event and we are once again teaming up with the First Tee program to provide a FREE half day of instruction in both golf and character building.  There are two sessions and we would LOVE to have as many ladies volunteer as possible so that the young ladies get more one on one attention.  The First Tee has a great ‘lesson plan’ for instruction so you don’t have to be a great player to help out just great enthusiasm (trust me, NO ONE wants to learn a golf swing from ME😊). Volunteer Here!
Monday, June 19 is the Twin Best Ball at Dayton Country Club.  This is followed the next week by the Mixed Metro at Walnut Grove.  This is our only two person event:  one guy, one gal teams will play a Combined Stableford Points format; a little more forgiving than the Alternate Shot in previous years!
Piecing together a tournament calendar in what is essentially a five month season at best is quite a challenge.  There are MVGA events, USGA events, Ohio events and countless Monday outings to work around in order to try to avoid conflicts.  When we initially had the Dayton City Am on the calendar it conflicted with the Ohio Amateur….trying to move a one day tournament is difficult enough but to try to find room on a golf course for a five day tourney is near impossible.  Steve Jurick and Tournament Chair, Daryl Nels, decided to split up our Championship into two distinct tournaments:  the Women’s Metropolitan Stroke Play Championship and the DDWGA Match Play Championship.
The Metro will be played July 20-22 at Heatherwoode Golf Club in conjunction with the Men’s Metro (yes, we will have early tee times…..).  The format is simple:  two days of stroke play for the Flight and Division awards.  Gone are the Senior and Super Senior Divisions; given the demographics of our active golfers, we are introducing a Mid Am (ages 30-59) and Senior (ages 60+) Divisions!  If you have the game, or just the drive, to battle it out for the Overall Championship, you will play an additional 18 holes on Saturday.  While I highly recommend you register for a GHIN handicap at your local club, you do NOT have to have a GHIN # to participate in this tournament as it is a gross event.
Match Play will be Wednesday, Aug. 2 – Friday, Aug. 4 at Beavercreek.  You WILL need a GHIN # for this as you will be seeded based on your Handicap Index.  There will be Consolation Flights as in the past so you are guaranteed two rounds of golf plus a lunch for only $90!  The Dayton District Champion will be the last woman standing after a 36 hole Championship Match on Friday!
Our final event is the Fall Classic on Monday, September 25 at Country Club of the North.  Grab those same three friends from the Shamble, or three completely new friends, and play 18 holes of 1 Net/1 Gross Better Ball.  Teams consisting of four ladies representing the same club will be competing for an extra prize; a traveling trophy to be displayed at their club for the next year.  CCN are the defending champs and are looking to keep that trophy in their clubhouse!
As you can see, we have a full slate of tournaments with a couple twists thrown in there in an effort to increase participation because the more ladies who play, the more $$$ goes into the DDWGA Scholarship Fund!  To date, $67,000 has been awarded to deserving ladies who, with golf as an integral part of their lives, have developed into well-rounded individuals in pursuit of higher education.
