DAYTON/INDIANAPOLIS – Winners of their seventh Horizon League Championship in program history, the Wright State golf team is headed to the NCAA Championship for the sixth time in program history, where the Raiders will take part in the Columbus Regional. The Raiders learned their destination Wednesday afternoon as part of the live Selection Show on the Golf Channel.
The Raiders will play a practice round on Sunday, May 15 before teeing off the regional with 18 holes each day from Monday-Wednesday, May 16-18 at the OSU Golf Club. Columbus is one of six regional sites that will all tee off around the country over those three days, with the National Championship teeing off May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Wright State captured its seventh Horizon League Championship in Florida earlier this month, where the Raiders led wire-to-wire to notch their ninth team title of the season, a program record, and their second Horizon League championship in the last three years the tournament was held. Wright State also previously won the Horizon League Championship in 1996, 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2004 before breaking the 15-year drought with the 2019 title. The seven team Horizon League titles are tied for the second-most in League history.
Wright State has tallied nine team tournament wins in 12 total events spanning the fall and spring schedule, a new program record, and five different Raiders have captured an individual title this season as well.
Tyler Goecke was named Horizon League Golfer of the Year and
Conner Lash was named the HL Coach of the Year. In addition to the two major awards, Goecke was joined on the All-League First Team by
Mikkel Mathiesen and
Bryce Haney, while
Cole Corder earned Second Team honors. In addition, Mathiesen was the 2022 Horizon League individual champion with his 13-under total, marking the first time a Raider has won the individual title since former Wright State standout Ryan Wenzler in 2016. Mathiesen's individual title is the seventh overall individual Horizon League honor in Wright State history, giving the Raiders the most individual champions in League history.
