FTSG Local Golf News for July 24
Haney Leads the Metropolitan

Haney_Out_of_the_BunkerThrough two rounds of this year's 98th Metropolitan, held at The GC at Yankee Trace, multiple players are in very solid position going into the weekend's rounds as the leader board is starting to tighten up.  Bryce Haney's one under par 71 was enough to place him in 1st Place as first round leader Cody Cogdill came in with a 75.  Alone in 2nd Place is Jeff Scohy, the 2010 Champion, as fired a 1 under 71 and is one back.  At the halfway point there are five players under par.

The midway cut fell at 154, 10 over par and 33 players will continue into the 3rd Rd which begins at 7:40am, with the final grouping going out at 9:20am.

Hole #17 continued to play as the hardest hole, followed by Hole #2.  The easiest hole in the second round was #11 as the tee was moved way up for all to have a chance to drive the green.  Tomorrow's Round will see hole # 2 play at just over 300 yards to create some excitement early in the third round.

Spectators are welcome and the final group tees off at Yankee Trace at 9:20am.

Marissa Wenzler, Medalist in the Women's Western Amateur

WentzerDayton's Own, Marissa Wenzler, liked Park Ridge Country Club the moment she saw the course.

“I immediately texted my coach and told him I felt comfortable out here,” she said.

It sure looked that way as the 20-year-old Wenzler shot 67-69 to finish the stroke play portion of the 121st Women’s Western Amateur at 8 under par and earn medalist honors this past Wednesday. The UK junior edged Emma McMyler of San Antonio, Texas, by one shot.

“Unbelievable,” said Wenzler, who received a congratulatory water shower from her fellow competitors on the 18th green. “The competition at this tournament is stacked. These players are so good.”

JORDaN GILKISON AT US Junior
Jordan_GilkisonSpringboro's Jordan Gilkison, who recently committed to play collegiate golf at Kent State University, competed at this year's U.S. Junior Amateur hosted at The Country Club of North Carolina. The U.S. Junior is the epitome of junior golf as it includes 264 of the best junior players from around the world.

Very unlike Gilkison, he struggled out of the gate carding a triple bogey, double bogey, and two bogeys in just his first nine holes. This led to a Round 1 score of 80 (+8) on the Dogwood Course. Gilkison was able to comeback Round 2 to card four birdies on his way to a round of 72 (+1) on the tougher Cardinal Course, but unfortunately wasn't enough to qualify him for Match Play.

Miami Valley Team Invitational

Team_InviteThe annual Miami Valley Team Invitational was founded in 1994 by David McSemek and his then firm, Smith Barney as an event at the end of the season to determine who had the best playing club each year.

This year's invitational is taking place on September 23rd at The Country Club of the North.

The format of this year's invitational includes teams of 8 players from each club in this 27-hole event.  Play includes 9 holes of Best Ball, 9 holes of Alternate Shot, and 9 holes of a Singles.  At conclusion, the winner will be decided by the lowest aggregate score from all 3 competitions.

At the most previous invitational in 2019, it was NCR Country Club who was victorious, beating Country Club of the North by 10 strokes.
