FTSG, Local Golf News for March 19
Austin Greaser at Augusta
By Sean Melia, Contributing Writer

DSCN3248For most college kids, a weekend off-campus likely means a trip home to do laundry and gobble up some homemade meals.

For Austin Greaser, a weekend away in early March means something very different. On a Thursday evening, Greaser hopped in his car and headed south from Chapel Hill, North Carolina to Augusta, Georgia. It was the second trip in as many weekends to Augusta National, the hallowed grounds that hosts The Masters every April, and Greaser has some work to do. After finishing runner-up in the 2021 U.S. Amateur, Greaser’s name is on the list for the most exclusive party in golf.

For the Rest of the Story

The first round of the Masters only 19 days away.  During Masters Week we hope to bring you regular updates of Austin's time at the Masters.  Thanks to Sean Melia & Ryan Gillen for their collaboration on this!

B. There is no penalty for giving the wrong number of strokes after completing a hole if doing so did not affect the opponent’s understanding of the results of the hole.

C. If a player unknowingly gives the wrong number of strokes that affects the result of a hole and the match, the mistake must be corrected after the result is final.

Last Weeks Rules Question - Answer C

Pine_Cone_and_Golf_Ball

After a brief search you find a ball that you believe to be yours. The ball is resting against a pinecone that will make it difficult to play the shot and, if removed, could cause the ball to move. Complicating matters, the pesky pinecone obscures the spot on the ball where your identification mark is located.

Rather than marking and lifting the ball to identify it, you see that lifting the pinecone will be to your advantage, so you move the pinecone instead of lifting the ball thus causing the ball moves and yes, it turns out to be your ball.

The ruling is:

A. You may lift and identify in this case only by marking its spot and lifting to ensure that the pinecone remains a challenge in playing your next stroke, so you get one penalty stroke for causing your ball to move and the ball must be replaced, but you are not required to replace the pinecone.

B.  You get no penalty as long as you replace the pinecone and the ball.

C.  You get no penalty as long as you replace the ball but are not required to replace the pinecone.

D. You are disqualified under Rule 1.2 (Serious Misconduct) for circumventing the Spirt of the Rules.
