Active_Season_Begins_March_15thDon't forget to set your clocks an hour ahead tonight!

  • You play less than 7 Holes
  • An event requires less than 14 clubs or limits types of clubs
  • Using non-conforming equipment
  • Playing a round in an inactive area of the country or playing a course that does not have a course rating

    Core Aeration
2022-03-12-Nicoludis-Zach-Core_Aeration_copyAs the 2022 golf season approaches, many golfers are likely getting the itch to play the first round of the year. Similarly, golf course superintendents are getting the itch to perform some important agronomic practices. Most notably, cultural management practices like aeration. Here are a few points to keep in mind when you play a course where aeration has recently been performed.

US Open Final Competitor Wins Puerto Rico Open

Ryan_BrehmMiami Valley Golf is fortunate to host a US Open Final Stage every year at Springfield Country Club.  This year is no different as we are again hosting one on Monday June 6.  Incidentally, we will be needing plenty of walking scores and other volunteers to help us through the day and you can get involved as a volunteer here.

As we've had quite a few years of running this final stage qualifier it's always fun to share stories of those who have come through Springfield on their way to further success.  Last week, the PGA Tour had two events, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the Puerto Rico open.

In that field of the Puerto Rico Open was Ryan Brehm who was using a minor medical extension which he attained because of a COVID withdrawal in 2021. Ryan came through Springfield last year and lost in the playoff for the final spot in last year’s US Open Final to Sahith Theegala, who you may remember made such a strong run at the WM Phoenix Open, Superbowl Weekend.

Ryan needed to either win the event or finish solo second for PGA Tour status for 2022, otherwise he would head back to the Korn Ferry tour where he's already made four starts.  Lo and behold he wins the Puerto Rico Open by 6 shots.

For the Rest is His Life Changing Story.

Stracka Line Hole Locations Added to Golf Genius

GG_Article_2022-03-12_copyOften used in competitive rounds as a great way to enhance the event. Traditionally these printed sheets have used circles and lines to indicate the locations of the holes on each green, giving the players more information than a range finder would. But as technology has advanced over the years the sheets have remained unchanged, until now.

Golf Genius has now partnered with StrakaLine, the provider of course yardage books for the PGA Tour, bringing your hole location sheet to the next level. Gone are the days of circles and lines, as StrakaLine provides a detailed GPS layout of the green and surrounding bunkers, providing you with a more exact view of the landing area.

    Lower Back Pain

It is estimated that more than half of you reading this article will experience low back pain that will affect your performance at some point this season. And at least 50% of you have missed 3-6 weeks of participation in the past because of the pain.  That is a big deal!  The most common cause of injuries in amateurs is mechanics.  So here’s the best part, low back pain is very preventable!

Lower_Back_Pain_FemaleThe six most common mechanisms of injury are:

    1. Poor body mechanics
    2. Poor swing mechanics
    3. Excessive Practice (overuse)
    4. No regular customized exercise program
    5. Poor nutrition
    6. Improper club fitting

Looking at the most common mechanisms of injury we can see that we can easily address every single one.  Your swing instructor can easily address your swing mechanics and club fitting and your TPI professional (Swing Rx ;)) can address the body mechanics, exercise program, nutrition, and also make sure you don’t overtrain.  Let’s talk a little more about the first 2 since body and swing mechanics will have the greatest influence on injuries.

GoeckeOver the past week, Wright State's successful season continues to improve as they go 2-for-2 on wins during their spring break. They began their break in Orlando, where they won the Orlando Invitational by 21 strokes and fired a team score of 5-under-par. Tyler Goecke, from Xenia, collected medalist honors as he carded a 54-hole score of 6-under-par, winning by 5 strokes. Bryce Haney, Mikkel Mathiesen, Cole Corder, and Davis Root all also finished in the top 15.

Following the win in Orlando, the team traveled to St. Simmons Island, GA where they competed in the Sea Palms Invitational in a field of 18 teams. After the conclusion of the 36 holes, the Raiders trailed by 8 strokes to the Dayton Flyers. Led again by Junior Tyler Goecke, the Raiders rallied to shoot a tournament-low round of 10-under-par 274 in the final round. It wasn't until the final 9 holes of the tournament where the Raiders were able to gain back the ground. As a team, the Raiders carded 17 birdies and 1 eagle in the final 9 holes, allowing them to quickly climb their way back up the leaderboard. Individually, Tyler Goecke finished tied for 3rd, Cole Corder finished in 8th place, Bryce Haney tied for 13th, Mikkel Mathiesen tied for 24th, and Davis Root tied for 47th.

This gives Wright State their 5th and 6th win of this school year, making them now 6-for-8 on tournament wins in the 2021/2022 season. They now have 3 weeks off before they compete again on March 27th and 28th at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, NC.

    This Week's Rules Question

Pine_Cone_and_Golf_BallAfter a brief search you find a ball that you believe to be yours. The ball is resting against a pinecone that will make it difficult to play the shot and, if removed, could cause the ball to move. Complicating matters, the pesky pinecone obscures the spot on the ball where your identification mark is located.

Rather than marking and lifting the ball to identify it, you see that lifting the pinecone will be to your advantage, so you move the pinecone instead of lifting the ball thus causing the ball to move and yes, it turns out to be your ball.

    The ruling is:

    A. You may lift and identify in this case only by marking its spot and lifting to ensure that the pinecone remains a challenge in playing your next stroke, so you get one penalty stroke for causing your ball to move and the ball must be replaced, but you are not required to replace the pinecone.

    B. You get no penalty as long as you replace the pinecone and the ball.

    C. You get no penalty as long as you replace the ball but are not required to replace the pinecone.

    D. You are disqualified under Rule 1.2 (Serious Misconduct) for circumventing the Spirt of the Rules.

Last Weeks Rules Question - Answer B

Late_to_TeePlayers A & B are scheduled to play each other in a match beginning at 8:00 a.m. Due to non-extraordinary circumstances, Player A arrives at the tee ready to play at 8:02 a.m. and Player B arrives ready to play at 8:04 a.m. Player A declares that he has won the 1st hole since he arrived at the tee before B. B makes a request for a ruling as he believes the match should be tied after the 1st hole.

A member of the Committee is not currently available, so the players proceed to the 2nd hole which is a Par 3.

After A tees off on the 2nd hole B asks him which club he used and A replies that he used a 5 iron. A completes the hole in 3 strokes while B completes the hole in 4 strokes.

The players meet with a member of the Committee on the 3rd tee and inform them of their ruling request. How does the match stand after the 2nd hole?

    B. A is 1 up
