FTSG Local Golf News for June 5th
US Open Final Monday at Springfield CC

One of the Eleven, Final Stages of the US Open Qualifier, will be held this Monday at Springfield Country Club where it has been held 11 of the last 13 years.  The Springfield location was initially added to host the overflow from the Columbus Sectional as it became too large for even the two Columbus courses to accommodate.

The US Open is truly an open competition as any professional or amateur with a Handicap Index of 1.4 or better is eligible to enter.  This year there was nearly 10,000 registered and all but a very small percentage competed to advance out of the 108 Local Qualifiers contested around the country.  The low scorers at each site and those exempt advance to the Final Qualifying which will be held this Monday in Golfs Longest Day as the competitors will play 36 holes.

US_Open_Qualifying_Levels_2021Among those expected to compete in this year’s Springfield US Open Final are Jim Herman who has three career wins on the PGA tour. Troy Merritt & Michael Thompson with two PGA Tour career wins, Dawson Armstrong, Ryan Brehm, Quade Cummins, Nick Hardy, Bo Hoag, Beau Hossler, Logan McAllister, Chip McDaniel, John Murphy, Aaron Pike, Robert SheltonRichy Werenski and back for his eighth visit is Brian Stuard who has successfully qualified for the US Open five times through our Springfield Location.

Strong Amateurs in the field include our two time Metropolitan Champion, Austin Schoonmaker a recent Wright State Grad along with his former WSU team mate Cameron Willis and Hayden Zimmerer, the returning, 5th year Senior at the University of Dayton.

Morning Tee Times Run between 7 and 9:05 and the Afternoon Tee Times begin at 12:30 and run through 2:35.  Playoffs for any of the qualifying or alternate positions will be held immediately after the final scorecard is turned in, generally around 7:15.

Scores can be followed for the Springfield Qualifier at QScores.org and all the qualifiers can be followed on USOpen.com and the Golf Channel will feature coverage all day from all the Final Qualifying Sites.

Spectators are welcome and their is no cost to attend.

Wilberforce Golf Program Growing
By Sean Melia, Contributing Writer for Miami Valley Golf
William_Ware_SizeWill Ware has spent the last 11 months rebuilding the men’s and women’s golf programs at Wilberforce University. Since his hiring in July 2020, Wade has worked tirelessly to fill out his men’s and women’s golf rosters, all while dealing with the complication of a pandemic. When Ware was hired last summer, most golfers interested in playing competitively in college had picked a school, so Wade had to be creative. He scoured the Dayton public schools for “athletes that were interested in going to college.” He found some and got to work.

US Open Qualifying Facts

  • Logo_Overlay_for_3_SouthThe USGA established a system of regional qualifying in 1924.
  • Local qualifying was instituted in 1959, meaning that non-exempt players needed to go through a two-tier qualifying process to earn a spot in the championship.
  • In 2005, the first final qualifiers were held outside the United States, in England and Japan. International qualifying has continued since then with an additional qualifier now held in Canada since 2019.
  • Final qualifying, conducted over 36 holes, will be held at 10 U.S. sites in 2021. One is set for Monday, May 24, in Texas, while nine are scheduled on Monday, June 7: two in Ohio and one each in California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New York, South Carolina and Washington. An international qualifier will be contested in Japan on May 24.
  • England and Canada will not host a site this year due to COVID-19. An exemption category has been added in which players can earn entry based on the three-event U.S. Open 2021 European Tour Qualifying Series (Betfred British Masters, Made in HimmerLand presented by FREJA and Porsche European Open, May 15-June 6). The top 10 aggregate point earners from those events, who were otherwise not exempt, will earn spots in the U.S. Open field.
  • Ken Venturi (1964) and Orville Moody (1969) are the only players to win the U.S. Open after qualifying through both local and final play. Gene Littler (1961), Julius Boros (1963), Jerry Pate (1976), Steve Jones (1996), Michael Campbell (2005) and Lucas Glover (2009) won after advancing through final qualifying.
