FTSG Local Golf News for February 19
Why it Matters

Theegala_Web_PostLast week, Sahith Theegala, a Professional Golfer with little status, none on the PGA Tour, made a great run at the WM Phoenix Open title.  This is perhaps one of the most visible players to come through our community recently as he qualified for the final spot in last years US Open Final Stage Qualifier at Springfield CC.

Sahith is one of countless golfers our collective Miami Valley Golf community have supported over the years.  For every Sahith, there are countless developing golfers that have been supported by all of you in some way.  As we move closer to the 2022 golf season, we call on our golf community to again support the many ways golf can be an agent of change for our area.

One easy way to make a difference and have fun is to volunteer at any number of our events.

You can follow this link to see what dates are available.

We look forward to seeing you on the Links!

Clubhouse Fires in the Miami Valley

Oakland_Hills_FireThursday’s unfortunate fire at Oak Hill’s CC’s, got us thinking of fires to our area clubhouses through the years.  We know this is far from a complete list as fires were much more common years ago, so please send along any clubhouse fire you are aware of, and the approximate year and we will add it to our list.

NCR CC – November of 2019
Sugar Valley GC – July of 2014
Meadowbrook CC – Late 80’s ??
Hamilton Elks GC – 1956
Springfield CC – Early 1900’s ??

Fitness Program Mistake

ExerciseOne of the most common mistakes I see golfers make with their fitness programs is trying to be too “golf specific” and replicate the golf swing with their exercises.  Most of the exercises to increase power and speed have nothing to do with a swinging motion.  In fact, when we do include rotary/swinging movements we actually train in the opposite direction more frequently.

This is a theory that was given the name “The Big Break Theory” by TPI Advisory Board member, Dr. Tom House. We have noticed that there seems to be a strong correlation between the longest hitters in the world and a history of speed training in the opposite direction. In other words, if they are a right-handed golfer, they would train for speed left-handed.

Player A tees a ball within the teeing area and hits his drive down the right hand side of the fairway towards a penalty area surrounded by high grass. Believing that his ball could be lost in the high grass, he correctly announces that he will play a provisional ball under rule 18.3, re-tees a ball, hitting it into the same general area of the original ball. Upon arriving at location where he believes his tee shots to be, both balls are found inside a penalty area marked by Red Stakes. Player A has failed to mark either of his golf balls and is now unable to identify either of them. How does he proceed?

A.       Unable to identify his ball, the player must abandon both balls, return to the teeing area, playing his 5th shot under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 18.1).

B.        With not being able to identify either of his balls, the player must drop a ball using the lateral relief area option, under rule 17.1d(3), playing his 5th shot.

C.        Since both balls were found in the penalty area, the player may choose either of them as his original ball and proceed by taking Penalty Area relief, under rule 17.1d, playing his 3rd shot or may choose either of the balls as his provisional ball and play it as his 4th shot.

D.       With both balls found, the player must estimate which of the balls was his original, abandon the provisional ball, and must take relief under the unplayable ball options found in Rule 19, playing his 3rd shot.

The Hub by Golf Genius

Golf_Hub_copyOne of the most challenging aspects for golf facilities is the ability to effectively communicate with your membership across multiple platforms. Recognizing this, Golf Genius has recently released a new feature call Golf Hub, which can be used in your email and social media promotions to dive interest for your clubs’ events and to make it easy for your members to register.

Simply put, a Golf Hub Page is a promotional landing page, or digital flyer, for any event, league, clinic, or social event at your facility. You can quickly and easily create a Golf Hub Page for any new or existing event in Golf Genius TM. Simply supply the basic details, select a banner image from your library, optionally enable online registration (with or without payments), and Golf Genius TM will automatically create a standard and professional landing page.
