FTSG LOCAL GOLF NEWS FOR August 7
Annual Tri-City Matches Recap

TriCity

The Women's Tri-City Matches took place this past Tuesday on the South Course at NCR Country Club after a one-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Throughout the day it was a very tight race between all three teams. It was towards the end of the matches where both Columbus and Dayton were able to gain a commanding lead over Cincinnati. With the last few groups finishing, it was unclear which team was going to end up at the top.

Eventually, it was the women from Dayton that were able to capture the victory with a couple of great finishes from a few of their players.

Dayton now has won 8 of the last 12 matches.

Next year the Matches will be held and hosted by the ladies from Cincinnati.

Great playing to all the ladies!

US Women's Am Local Qualifiers Advance

The prestigious U.S. Women's Amateur began this past Monday at Westchester Country Club in Rye, NY.

The field of 156 competitors included 6 ladies who qualified out of Walnut Grove CC on July 8th. These ladies are Lauren Hartlage, Malia Nam, Alexandra Swayne, Marissa Wenzler, Jensen Castle, Blair Stockett, and first alternate Aneka Seumanutafa who also ended up getting into the championship.

After 2 rounds of stroke-play qualifying, Aneka Seumanutafa led the local names with qualifying rounds of 70 (-2) and 74 (+2), which gave her the 13th seed heading into match-play. Following was Lauren Hartlage who was just +2 after qualifying, which landed her a 36th seed heading into match-play. Then it was both Jensen Castle and Marissa Wenzler, who both carded a 36-hole score of +6, landing them in a 12-way tie at 63rd place. Castle and Wenzler were the only two girls out of twelve to birdie the first playoff hole, which secured them the last two spots in the bracket as the 63rd and 64th seed.

In the Round of 64, Marissa Wenzler, Jensen Castle, and Aneka Seumanutafa all were victorious winning by 1 up, 3 & 2, and 1 up, respectively.

In Thursday's Round of 32, Jensen Castle won her match over Sophie Linder (1up) while carding an impressive six birides. Marissa Wenzler was defeated by Hailey Borja 3 & 2 and Ankeka Seumanutafa was defeated by Aline Krauter 2 down.

During Thursday afternoon's Round of 16 match, Castle continued to impress by carding five birdies and defeating the 15th seed Jenny Bae 4 & 2, which earned her a spot in the quarterfinals.

Castle got off to a very hot start in yesterday's quarterfinals match as she was 5 up thru 8 against her opponent, Australia's Emily Mahar. The young University of Kentucky sophomore has now found herself in the semifinals, which will be played this morning.

Information on the Event

Early Extension
By Dr. Nick Curry

Early_ExtensionEarly Extension occurs when the hips and spine of a golfer start to go into extension, or straighten up too early on the downswing. This can be seen when the pelvis moves closer to the ball on the downswing. The lower body does not easily rotate through impact, instead it pushes forward and the person stands up.

Players will often complain of being stuck or trapped with their arms on the downswing. This is because the lower body has moved into the space where the arms need to go. The result can be a block or hook as the hands and arms desperately try to deliver the club to the ball. Because of Early Extension, if golfers don’t do anything with their hands through impact they may actually shank some shots because they are closer to the ball than they were at address.
