FTSG for the Last Week in September
Thank a Superintendent
This past Wednesday saw the National #ThankASuperintendent Day.  Just because we only send this email on Saturday does not mean we did not want thank the unsung hero's of our golf industry.

Why should we thank them?  Here are just a few reasons.
  • Thank_a_SuperintendentThey ensure our courses stay beautiful and playable.
  • They manage the labor, materials and costs associated with keeping each course in its best playing condition.
  • They are environmental stewards who continually strive to keep golf courses healthy and beautiful while employing sustainable management practices.
  • Because of your superintendent, courses are using less water and expanding natural wildlife habitats.
  • And Much Much More!
Jim Weaver Wins the US Open Contest

Bryson_Kissing_TrophyCongratulations to Jim Weaver, winner of the 2020 MVGA US Open Contest.

Jim's score of 18 tied one other contestant, Sue McCall. Jim's guess of a -14 winning score was enough to give him victory and earn him the prize of 6 dozen personalized golf balls of his choosing.

Among the 278 entries, only two people correctly picked Bryson DeChambeau as the Champion to earn the 5 point bonus.

Thanks again to Alex Huang for organizing these contest for us!

Next Up....The Masters Contest in November, enjoy the fall golf!

HIGH SCHOOL SECTIONALs START THIS WEEK
Road_to_StateEvery year about this time, hundreds of high school golfers try and qualify for the State Championships in their Division.  In the Southwest Region alone there are 17 Sectionals that qualify the top four teams and individuals to go on to the district qualifier.

The odds get longer to make it out of the District Qualifier to the State Championship as only the top two teams and individuals from each of the five Division, District Championships head to to the State Championship later in October.

Good Luck to all the Players, their Coaches, family members and all the volunteers who help ensure these young golfers receive a wonderful experience.

PULL STRENGTH
Medball_Shot_Put

We have spent the last month talking about speed and power production and how to incorporate that into a training program.  If you watched the US Open this past weekend, you saw how advantageous strength and power can be.  The style of play where you just hit it as far as you can and deal with whatever lie you have hasn’t been very well received by traditional golfers, but we can see that it can clearly be effective.  Sure, power is great for hitting the ball farther, but just as important (or more important) was the strength to hit out of that thick rough.  Even if you can’t hit the ball a mile I am sure you have been in thick rough a time or two.  There are 2 areas of strength that are critical for trying to power through those tough lies, grip strength and pull strength.

Random Golf Footnotes from John Fischer
Ralph_GuldahlIn the late 1930s one player dominated golf, winning the Western Open three years in a row, the U.S. Open back-to-back, and the Masters after finishing second in the two prior years. He was clearly the man to beat. And then he disappeared from golf. His name was Ralph Guldahl. Attached as a pdf file is his story which first appeared in Morning Read (morningread.com) on September 17, 2020.

Ralph was an interesting person, not a long hitter, but accurate with an odd swing which he could repeat time after time. I think you’ll enjoy his story.

A NOTE ON OUR YOUTH ON COURSE PROGRAM
YOC_Banner

One of our core beliefs at Miami Valley Golf is believing that every child deserves access to the life changing opportunities that our game can provide regardless of socioeconomic status.

With that in mind, in 2018, we teamed up with Youth on Course to bring this national program to our Miami Valley area.

Youth on Course members can play at participating courses for $5 or less during allotted times, after paying a small membership fee which is also $5.

Our foundation (Miami Valley Golf Foundation) supports this program locally by supplementing the difference in green fees to the participating facility.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic we will need additional assistance as some of our opportunity for fund raising will not be available.  If possible, we encourage you to support this program.

An easy online contribution can be made here.

Thank you for your consideration!
