Ohio Mid-Am to Take PLace at Springfield CC

MidAm_2020The Ohio Mid-Am gets underway this Monday and runs until Wednesday at Springfield Country Club.  This 54 Hole Event was first contested in 1986 and has been won three times by players from our area, Dan DeVore in 2005, Jeff Scohy in 2015 and Matt Buse in 2017.

The championship has been played at Springfield CC one other time, in 1994, and was won by Randy Reifers from CC of Muirfield.

Good Luck to all those from the Miami Valley in the Field!

Pete Brown honored: true sports pioneer
Mrs_BrownAs she remembers it, he was about to tee off on the first playoff hole of the 1962 Michigan Open at Farmington Country Club outside Detroit.

It was the first year Blacks were allowed in the field and her husband, Pete Brown — the long-hitting, African American golfer who was the son of Mississippi share croppers, who had overcome poverty, polio and the Jim Crow restrictions of the South and who two decades later would become a beloved fixture at Madden Golf Course in Dayton — had all eyes on him that day.

“Pete stepped up to hit his ball and there was a whole group of guys across the fence at a pick-up truck,” Margaret Brown recalled.

DEVELOPING POWER

Goflers_ElbowTo develop power we first need to understand where power is needed. With any power source, you need to develop strength and speed in all areas. The four power sources that influence the golf game the most are:

  1. Vertical Thrust Power
  2. Trunk Rotary Power
  3. Arm-Chopping Power
  4. Elbow-Wrist Release Power

A NOTE ON OUR YOUTH ON COURSE PROGRAM
YOC_Banner

One of our core beliefs at Miami Valley Golf is believing that every child deserves access to the life changing opportunities that our game can provide regardless of socioeconomic status.

With that in mind, in 2018, we teamed up with Youth on Course to bring this national program to our Miami Valley area.

Youth on Course members can play at participating courses for $5 or less during allotted times, after paying a small membership fee which is also $5.

Our foundation (Miami Valley Golf Foundation) supports this program locally by supplementing the difference in green fees to the participating facility.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic we will need additional assistance as some of our opportunity for fund raising will not be available.  If possible, we encourage you to support this program.

An easy online contribution can be made here.

Thank you for your consideration!

Score Posting Questions
Send Additional Questions to info@mvgolf.org
Q: If I don't hole out in the "Traditional Sense" do I still post my score ?
Ball_in_HoleA: Yes,While in all of these instances, the ball is not holed per the Rules of Golf (Rule 3.3c), a round played under these conditions will result in an acceptable score for handicap purposes using the most likely score guidelines (see Rule 3.3 of the Rules of Handicapping).
when to NOT post your scores
March 15th signaled the start of the New Score Posting Season in the Miami Valley.  Here are a few things to remember when it comes to NOTposting your score.  All other times you should!

When_to_PostSo, don't post your score....
  • When your score can’t be verified by another person
  • While being coached on the course
  • When you play using non-conforming clubs, non-conforming balls, or non-conforming tees;
  • When you don't play the required number of holes, Less than 6 for 9, less than 14 for 18.  For the holes you haven’t played, you post net par for the hole.
  • And when you are not playing your own ball — scrambles, shambles or foursomes (alternate shot).

And remember...A key tenet of the World Handicap System is that it is based on the fact that a you will try to make the best score at every hole in every round.

So you post just about everything and that includes scores when you play Preferred Lies or adapting to modified Holes due to the Coronavirus !
