WAYS GOLF GIVEs BACKJune 23, 2018

WGC GC hosted the 6th MAK-A-THON 100 Holes of Golf yesterday. 42 golfers played in this year’s event in which each golfer played 100 holes to help raise funds for the Mark A. Kreusch Memorial Fund.

Each golfer played a total of 5 rounds (two balls on two par 3’s each round for 20 holes a round) in their own cart.

The event is a laid back, fun environment with unique aspects like a break-the-glass contest and kids with surprise water guns to help cool off participants. The MAK Fund is in memory of Mark Kreusch who tragically passed away at the age of 4 after a boating accident in 2007.

HOW DID OUR QUALIFIERS FINISHED IN THE US OPEN?
Of the five who qualified, only two made the cut.  Amateur, Will Grimmer, our Sectional Medalist continued his strong play through the first two rounds but slipped with weekend rounds of 78 and 80 to finish in 66th position.

Dylan Meyer who recently turn professional after a stellar collegiate career at Illinois finished in a tie for 20th.  Review article on his play

Tour veteran Brain Stuard, Web.com player, David Gazzolo and soon to be Ball State Senior, Timothy Wiseman (a) all missed the cut.

It was nice to see Tony Finau, who played in our Springfield Sectional on multiple occasions, play so well. He was in the last group on Sunday and finished alone in 5th position.

EMBRACING BUNKER IMPERFECTIONS

Bunkers play a prominent role in golf. They provide strategy, challenge and aesthetic beauty and are a topic of many spirited and enjoyable discussions after a round.

The earliest bunkers were naturally occurring areas of bare sand scattered throughout the links landscape. They were rough and rugged places, scoured by wind and filled with footprints and clumps of vegetation.

Over time, bunkers became formalized and golfer expectations for bunker playability increased. Today, the bunkers at most golf courses are intensively maintained and account for a large part of the maintenance budget.
