This week’s PGA Championship is being played over the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y. The course dates to the mid-1930s and was one of four courses at the Long Island park that were designed by A.W. Tillinghast as part of the federal Works Progress Administration. Tillinghast came to course architecture by chance, and he became one of the tops in the profession during the 1920s and ’30s.
