DDWGA ACTIVITIES FOR 2021

Hello Fellow Lady Golfers!

As we carefully peak our heads around the corner of the pandemic, we are planning on a full schedule of DDWGA events for the 2021 golf season!  (To Register for the Spring Shamble)

For those not familiar with the Dayton Women’s Golf Association, it was formed in 1992 by a group of enthusiastic golfers whose mission was to build camaraderie among the lady golfers of the Miami Valley AND to mentor young girls in the game we all love.

The DDWGA is easy to “join”:  in fact, if you have a GHIN handicap at one of the golf clubs (including e-golfer) in the Miami Valley YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY A MEMBER!  How easy is that!!!  So why not get involved?

571The DDWGA hosts three competitive golf tournaments during the season.  All of our events are four lady team events (except for the City Amateur) and are flighted so you are competing with golfers of similar ability.  Some women cringe at the word “competitive” and “tournament” but all they really mean is you get to: ·

Play really nice courses (the 2021 schedule has us at Urbana, Country Club of the North and Piqua!!!!) ·

  • Play with friends that you dupe into coming with you
  • Laugh
  • Make new friends
  • Eat good food
  • Drink if you play poorly

Maybe win a prize—we are paying out more places than ever!!! More than a 1/3 of the field wins with Gross and Net prizes in EACH FLIGHT!!!

We also host a fun, “mini” event at each of your clubs!  I’m sure many of you have seen “DDWGA Pin Day” on your schedule and simply scratched your head as to what that is.  Each year our member courses should be conducting a DDWGA Pin Day during your regular league play.  The club rep for your course is given two DDWGA pins:  one for Low Gross and one for Low Net for that day.  Those ladies will be recognized at our final event, the Fall Classic on August 30.  This is a great way to celebrate the season with your friends…whether or not you won the “Pin”.

This year we will once again be running our Ladies’ District Championship in conjunction with the Men’s Metropolitan:  July 22-25 at Yankee Trace GC. This is a three day, stroke play tournament for those eager to duke it out with the best the Valley has to offer.  In addition to the Overall Championship, there will also be a two day, Mid-Am and Senior Divisional Championships!

20-X2The backbone of our organization is our scholarship fund; we actually have TWO that serve very different purposes.  We have a collegiate scholarship fund from which we provide scholarships to young ladies who, with golf as an integral part of their lives, have developed into well-rounded individuals in pursuit of higher education.  We currently have a deadline of April 15 if you know of a young lady who may be interested!  We will also be offering a secondary application deadline for the fall…check out the link for more information:

We also have the Diana Schwab Fund.  This fund has traditionally paid for the expenses associated with the Diana Schwab ‘Get a Girl Golfing’ event held each summer, this year at Community:  lunch and free membership into the LPGA *USGA Jr Girls’ Club.  In the past, we have teamed up with the First Tee for programming for the day’s events.  This year, while we are still in the planning stages, we are looking to team up with the LPGA*USGA Jr Girls’ Club directly to offer a more long-term path of participation in our sport for our local young ladies!  Stay tuned for details!

We also offer opportunities to volunteer for the many USGA tournaments that are held in our area each year.  More and more USGA tournament qualifiers are being held at our Miami Valley golf facilities and these tournaments require volunteers as spotters, scorers, transport, etc.

The theme to my letter, ladies, is that you don’t have to have a single digit handicap to play in (or win) ANY of the DDWGA events--and you don’t have to be a single digit handicap to help out with the many volunteering opportunities that the DDWGA and Miami Valley Golf Association offer each year.

So, once again, I would like to invite you, as a DDWGA member, to participate in the events of the 2021 season. Our first event of the year is the Spring Shamble at 1pm at Urbana Country Club on May 17. This is a fun, low pressure, four lady event—each lady tees off, select the best tee shot and play your ball in from there; lowest two scores count.

Thank you and see you on the links!
